A few of the lovely ladies at Friday night’s knit night were working on a pattern that I just had to try, the Star Crossed Slouchy Beret by Natalie Larson. It always seems like a good sign to me when I see 2 or 3 people knitting the same pattern and it comes out looking just right. I’m not necessarily a follower but sometimes a good pattern is a good pattern and Star Crossed is one of the most popular patterns on Ravelry. The pattern was cute, trendy, uses the soft and colourful Malabrigo worsted, and knits up nice and quick. These are a lot of the things I look for in a pattern! I whipped this one up this past weekend.

To make this hat you will need:

The pattern (free here on Ravelry)

1 skein Malabrigo Worsted

6mm and 8mm needles

Once I had finished my Star Crossed hat my charming cousin insisted I make her a slouchy hat too. I thought I would do something a little different so I knit up the Meremaid tam. Her favorite Disney movie is the Little Mermaid so it was a perfect fit. I knit this one up in colours Purple Grapes and Mustard. The more contrast between the two colours for this hat, the better.

To knit the Mermaid Tam you will need:

The pattern here

2 skins of Malabrigo Worsted

5mm needles

Once you have knit a hat or 2 I think you will find you have some leftovers. Or, perhaps you have a little worsted weight yarn just kicking around in your stash. I found this cute little pattern called the Who? ipod cozy by Kayleen Grage. To make this little cutie you will need

The pattern here

A little bit of yarn

3.5mm double pointed needles

2 little buttons

I hope you enjoy a few quick knit slouchy hats!

Well it looks like gray is the “in” colour this year. Finally… a colour most of us can wear! And if you’re into bright colours, remember that you can always add bursts of colour in your accessories!

Take a look on page 68, to find a fabulous tutorial on short-row shaping. If you’ve never done short-row shaping, give it a try! It creates the most gorgeous curves,  ruffles, and movement  in your garments.

Vogue Knitting International: Winter 2009/10 is available at both of our stores!

Hello out there in the Urban Yarns world, perhaps we haven’t met yet: I’m Alexa. I’ve been around the shop for a couple of years now and I knit, a lot. I thought I would use this weekly blog post to share some of the projects I’m working on and techniques I may have picked up along the way. To kick it off I thought I would start with something I know best: mittens!

crw_7162

I love mittens. I know love seems like a strong word but really, I love them. They are so warm and cozy, they remind me of snow (I have to be reminded from time to time as there was none on the streets of Vancouver this year) and of childhood, with mittens attached together with a string. I have knit many pairs this year and I was recently informed that January is National Knit Mittens month. There is even a ravelry group dedicated to it (here). These are a few of the mittens I have been working on.

crw_2402

crw_2397

First up are the infamous Fiddleheads. These mittens are very warm with a charming fuzzy lining. They aren’t exactly a beginner project but a good way to master fair isle knitting (that’s knitting with 2 colours at a time, one held behind the other). Mittens are a relatively small project so they are a good opportunity to learn something new.

For the Fiddlehead Mittens you will need:

1. The pattern, which is only available online here or through ravelry here.

2. Yarn: 2 skeins of Blue Sky Alpacas Sport, Melange, or Alpaca Silk in the main colour and up to 5 contrasting colours. For the lining you will need 1 skein of the Brushed Suri.

3. Needles: I used 3.5mm short double pointed needles. As usual if you are tighter knitter go up a size, looser knitter go down a size. Length of needle is also a preference thing.

The most important thing to remember when choosing your colours is to have a lot of contrast between your main colour and your contrast colours. They are called contrast colours for a reason. If you use navy blue against black you won’t be able to see the lovely fiddleheads form. If you choose a very light or very dark colour for the main it makes your life a lot easier. I am happy with my colour choices of the past but with so many options in the Blue Sky Alpacas Melange, Sport, and Alpaca Silk we are always contemplating new colour choices around the shop. These are a few:

The other pair of mittens I’ve been working on are my newest pattern: the Antler Mittens. They have a nice long cuff (which I enjoy but if you don’t, it’s an easy alteration) and they are cabled. I made them with the ever luxurious Worsted Hand Dyes to match my scarf. To whip up this pair you will need:

1. The pattern, availble at the shop

2. 2 skeins of Blue Sky Alpacas Worsted Hand Dyes

3. 5mm doubled pointed needles.

Even though these mittens are long they are done in a thick yarn so they knit up nice and quick. There is still plenty of January left to knit up a pair of mittens!

We’ve also added two new colours to our Blue Sky Bulky collection:

bulky-003bulky-004 On the left side, we have blossom, a sweet and girly pink. And on the right is a beautiful dark green called seaweed. Try knitting this on a 20mm needle to create a gorgeous neck scarf. Cast on 10-12 stitches and knit in rib.

As seen on the Spud and Chloe Blog – New patterns are now in!

This Li’l Man Vest is extremely cute, and should be a fairly fast and easy knit. Made with only 3 skeins of Outer and on 6.5 needles, you’ll have this knit up in no time at all.

Can’t decide which Spud and Chloe yarn to try out first? Why not try them all by making the Three Brrr Bears! With a few minor adjustments, the pattern is the same for all three bears, but since the yarns are different weights, they all come out in different sizes.

Everyone is always looking for poncho patterns for kids. Well I think we’ve found the perfect one now – the Pixie Poncho! With the beautiful fair-isle design, cute hood, and nice bright colours, I can’t see any little girl not liking this!

Simple and Classic. The Tea Party Cardi is an every day cardigan made in a simple broken rib pattern. I love three quarter length sleeves, but if you prefer longer, it’s a simple adjustment to make.

Tiptoe Cardigan is bright and cheerful. This would be a great cardi to have in the spring time, just as the flowers are blooming. Tiptoe Cardigan is knit  in Sweater with a fabric flower applique.

If you love putting different colours together, you may want to check out the Sassy Socks - think of all the endless colour combinations! This pattern uses Spud and Chloe Fine (we have all 13 colours!).
